Program: Cooperative across borders in the Mediterranean “ENI CBCMED”.
Project: Mediterranean Integrated System for Water Supply- MEDISS
A_B.4.1_0249
MEDISS addresses the issue of improving the quality of saline groundwater present in the MED area opening up alternative irrigation for higher quality and more diversified cultivations (dates, citrus, cereals….).
Program priority: Strengthen and support euro-Mediterranean networks, clusters, consortia and value-chains in traditional sectors (agro-food, tourism, textile/ clothing, etc.) and non- traditional sectors (innovative ideas solutions for urban development, ECO-housing, sustainable water- related and other clean technologies, renewable energy, creative industries, etc.)
Project General Objective:
To contribute to sustainable water balance in MEDISS areas, increasing resilience to water stress and climate change.
Project Specific Objectives are:
1. To reduce water and soil salinity through nonconventional water supply, reduce stress on groundwater and enabling high productivity and diversification of agricultural production.
2. To support LLAAs and organizations in WRM applying non-conventional water solutions for agricultural use, to reduce water consumption and limit costs for water supply.
3. To encourage behavioral change of end-users toward the use of non-conventional water agriculture.
Project Duration:
36 months/ 3 years, the period between 2019 and 2022.
Project outputs:
1. Surface of 1451.4 ha in land irrigated with wastewater and non-convention water, or equipped with modern and efficient irrigation systems.
2. Study visits, 4 bilateral meetings and 1 database.
3. 4 up-scaling proposals.
4. 4 Alliances: 1 Alliance/country.
5. 4 Handover agreements 1 local authority / country apply integrated approaches for water cycle management in agriculture, involved in cross-border thematic practitioner network on water in agriculture.
1. 1 Awareness program.
2. 1 Database.
3. 4 Pilot initiatives.
4. 15 Organizations involved in WRM applying sustainable innovative water efficiency and non- conventional water technologies with local water governance frameworks.
Project areas of intervention are Jericho valley (PA), Araba valley (JO), Olbia (IT), Gabes (TN), share the challenges of: i) water scarcity; ii) high salinity of water/ low water quality; iii) limited crop production / possible decrease of crop production; iv) limited knowledge of alternative sources of water supply and water management by local stakeholders; v) reluctance of farmers to use wastewater for irrigation; vi) high energy and maintenance cost for water treatments. MEDISS addresses these problems by encouraging use of non-conventional water supply, mainly TWW and desalination of brackish water, coupled with promotion of BAP and use of renewable energy.
MEDISS project is under the Cooperative across borders in the Mediterranean “ENI CBCMED” Programme, funded by the European Union (EU) and under the Sardinian Governorate administration”
